The Cornell Astronomical Society
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all CAS Open Houses and events have been suspended until further notice. (Updated February 12th, 2021)
The Cornell Astronomical Society & Fuertes Observatory
The Cornell Astronomical Society (CAS) has conducted public viewing nights at Cornell University's Fuertes Observatory for over 40 years. We open the observatory every Friday night during the academic year from 8:00 PM until midnight, regardless of weather. During the summer, winter, and other Cornell breaks, we generally try to be open from 8pm to midnight if the weather is clear. To find out if the observatory is currently open, call (607)-255-3557 for a prerecorded message. You can also check our Twitter Feed below for information on public viewing nights. Visit our Hours & Directions page for directions to the observatory, parking information, and a schedule of upcoming events.
The Observatory's main telescope is the Irving Porter Church Refractor, a 12-inch Brashear/Warner & Swasey achromat built in 1922. Several other smaller, more modern telescopes are also used for observing. Visit the Open House page for a list of likely targets and other information about open house nights at Fuertes.
Many open house nights are preceded by a talk as part of our Lecture Series on astronomical topics of public interest. Lectures are given by Cornell astronomy faculty and other researchers several times throughout the semester on Friday nights (prior to observing); visit the Lecture Series page for a list of upcoming lectures.
The Cornell Astronomical Society is Cornell's astronomy club. All Cornell students, regardless of prior experience or area of study, are welcome to become members of the CAS. Visit About the Club for more information on the CAS, including meeting and membership information.
Fuertes Observatory Tours and Group Events
Organizations and informal groups with an interest in astronomy may request an educational group observing session at Fuertes Observatory conducted by CAS volunteers. These can be arranged on non-Fridays and any night when the observatory is not reserved for introductory astronomy classes. Scheduling of events is subject to availability of CAS officers and provision of this offering is made at the full discretion of the CAS and Cornell Department of Astronomy.
Send us an email to arrange an event.
Fill out the form below to be added to our email listserv. We generally send out a weekly announcement listing the events at Fuertes for that Friday, as well as notifications about special events on non-Friday nights.
Ignore the "This request is invalid" message. Check your email for subscription verification.
